Title: The Seatmate Who Stayed
Series: Moments in the City â Story 3
The 7:42 AM train was always packed â shoulderâtoâshoulder, no personal space, no mercy.
Elise hated it.
But today, she had no choice.
She squeezed into the last empty seat â right beside a guy in a gray hoodie, earphones in, eyes closed like he was trying to survive the morning.
âSorry,â she whispered.
He opened one eye.
âItâs okay. You can sit.â
His voice was calm, low, unexpectedly gentle.
She settled in, hugging her tote bag.
The train lurched forward.
A few minutes passed in silence.
Then her phone buzzed.
She groaned softly.
âOh noâŚâ
The guy glanced at her.
âBad news?â
She sighed.
âMy boss moved our meeting earlier. Iâm definitely going to be late.â
He nodded sympathetically.
âRough morning?â
âYou have no idea.â
He pulled out one earbud.
âIâve got time. Tell me.â
She blinked.
âYou⌠want to hear about my morning?â
He shrugged.
âBetter than pretending to sleep.â
She laughed â surprised, but grateful.
âOkay,â she said. âWell⌠I spilled coffee on my blouse, missed my first train, and now my boss wants me in the office in twenty minutes.â
He winced.
âOof. Thatâs brutal.â
âRight?â
He leaned back.
âIâm Liam, by the way.â
âElise.â
âNice to meet you, Eliseâwhoâhadâaâterribleâmorning.â
She rolled her eyes playfully.
âThanks for the reminder.â
He grinned.
The train slowed as it approached the next station.
More people squeezed in, pushing Elise closer to Liam.
âSorry,â she murmured again.
âItâs fine,â he said. âCrowded train rules: no apologies needed.â
She smiled.
A few minutes later, the train jolted unexpectedly.
Elise lost her balance â
and Liam caught her arm.
âWhoaâcareful.â
Her face flushed.
âSorry! I didnât mean toââ
He shook his head.
âYouâre okay.â
He didnât let go immediately.
Not until she steadied herself.
The train continued.
âSo,â he said, âwhat do you do?â
âIâm a junior analyst. You?â
âGraphic designer.â
She raised an eyebrow.
âLet me guess â freelance?â
He laughed.
âHowâd you know?â
âYou have the vibe.â
âThe vibe?â
âYeah. The âI donât like officesâ vibe.â
He grinned.
âGuilty.â
They talked the rest of the ride â about work, about the city, about the cafĂŠ near the station.
âOh, the one with the barista named Hana?â Elise asked.
âYou know her?â
âYeah. Sheâs friends with my cousin.â
Liam nodded.
âSheâs cool. Makes good coffee.â
Elise smiled.
âMaybe Iâll try it sometime.â
âYou should,â he said. âIâm there most mornings.â
The train slowed again.
âThis is my stop,â Elise said, standing.
Liam looked up at her.
âHey⌠if you want, we can commute together again tomorrow.â
She hesitated â then smiled.
âIâd like that.â
He stood too, stepping aside to let her pass.
âSee you tomorrow, Elise.â
âSee you tomorrow, Liam.â
She walked out of the train with a lighter heart, a softer smile, and a feeling she hadnât felt in a long time.
Hope.
