Ava Morales loved bookstores.
Not the giant ones.
Not the noisy ones.
The tiny bookstores hidden between coffee shops and flower stores.
The kind that smelled like old paper and second chances.
It was Saturday afternoon.
Her planner was full of unfinished tasks.
She still had:
- Stories & Writing drafts
- Boss Suite updates
- AI Project notes
- Education resources
- Digital Product ideas
But somehow she ended up inside a small bookstore anyway.
As usual.
She wandered toward the fiction section and found an old paperback she’d been searching for.
The cover was slightly worn.
Perfect.
She bought it immediately.
That night, she curled up with tea and opened the book.
Something slipped out.
A bookmark.
Not unusual.
Until she picked it up.
The front was plain.
But the back contained a handwritten note.

“Oh.”

“Oh?”
“Then you found one of Tyler’s books.”
Ava blinked.
“Tyler?”
The owner pointed toward a man sitting near the window.
Reading.
Of course.
Because mysterious bookmark people apparently spent their afternoons reading by windows.
Tyler Mendoza looked up.
Unfortunately.
Because now he knew she was staring.

Perfect.
She immediately looked away.
The bookstore owner looked delighted.
Which was suspicious.

Five minutes later, she was standing in front of Tyler.

“You left this.”
She handed him the bookmark.
Tyler glanced at it.
Then smiled.
“Oh.”
That smile should probably come with a warning label.
“You write notes in books?”
He shrugged.
“Sometimes.”
“Why?”
Tyler looked genuinely surprised.
“Because reading is lonely.”
Ava blinked.
“What?”
His smile softened.
“I like the idea that someone finds it later.”
Her heart did a tiny flip.
Just a tiny one.
Nothing dramatic.

“A little strange.”
“I’ve heard that.”
“A lot?”
“A lot.”
She laughed.

More nervous.

Her heart forgot how to function.
Completely.
She closed the book.
Opened it again.
Read it twice.
Then three times.
When she finally looked toward the reading corner…
Tyler was watching her.
And smiling.
That smile.
Again.
Always that smile.
Ava walked over.
Holding the bookmark.
Holding her dignity.

“Was this intentional?”
Tyler looked innocent.
Which immediately meant yes.
“Maybe.”
“Tyler.”
“Okay. Yes.”
She laughed despite herself.
“You planned this?”
“For weeks.”
“Weeks?”
His grin widened.
“You’re hard to surprise.”
Her cheeks warmed.
That explained the random bookmarks.
The carefully chosen books.
The suspiciously specific recommendations.
This entire thing had been a slow-motion confession hidden inside literature.
Honestly?
She respected the effort.
Tyler stood.
Nervous.
For the first time.
“I’m not very good at grand gestures.”
Ava smiled.
“Good.”
His brow lifted.
“Good?”
She held up the bookmark.
“This is better.”
The relief on his face was immediate.
