THE NEIGHBOR WHO ALWAYS SHOWED UP

He wasn’t supposed to be there.

But somehow, he always was.

When her groceries were too heavy.

When her lightbulb died.

When her day fell apart.

And today, when she knocked on his door just to borrow tape,

he opened it and said,

“I was hoping you’d come by.”

Sometimes,

the person you need

lives one door away.

Title: The Neighbor Who Always Showed Up

Series: Moments in the City — Story 20

The hallway of her apartment building smelled faintly of laundry detergent and someone’s burnt toast.

Lara stepped out of her unit holding a half‑wrapped package and a roll of tape that had betrayed her by running out at the worst possible moment.

“Of course,” she muttered. “Why would anything go right today?”

She stared at the door across from hers.

Evan’s door.

Her neighbor.

Her almost‑friend.

Her maybe‑crush.

The guy who always seemed to appear exactly when she needed help —

carrying groceries, fixing her Wi‑Fi, rescuing her from a spider the size of a coin.

She took a breath.

“It’s just tape,” she whispered to herself. “You’re not proposing.”

She knocked.

The door opened almost immediately.

Evan blinked at her, surprised but smiling.

“Hey,” he said. “I was hoping you’d come by.”

Lara froze.

“You… were?”

He nodded.

“I baked too many cookies. Again.”

He held up a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies like it was the most normal thing in the world.

Lara laughed.

“You bake too much.”

“You accept too much,” he countered.

She shrugged.

“Fair.”

⭐ THE TAPE SITUATION

She held up her half‑wrapped package.

“Actually, I came to borrow tape.”

Evan grinned.

“Of course you did. Come in.”

She stepped inside —

warm lights, soft music, the faint smell of vanilla and sugar.

His apartment always felt like a hug.

Evan grabbed a fresh roll of tape from a drawer.

“You’re saved,” he said dramatically.

Lara rolled her eyes.

“Wow. My hero.”

He laughed.

“You want to wrap it here? I have scissors and ribbons and… way too many supplies.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“You’re very prepared.”

“I panic‑buy craft stuff,” he admitted. “It’s a problem.”

She smiled.

“It’s cute.”

He froze for half a second.

“Oh,” he said softly. “Thanks.”

⭐ THE WRAPPING MOMENT

They sat on the floor, the package between them, tape and ribbons scattered everywhere.

Evan held the box steady while Lara wrapped.

“You’re really good at this,” he said.

“I’ve had practice,” she replied. “My family is big on gifts.”

He nodded.

“Mine too.”

She glanced at him.

“You miss them?”

He shrugged.

“Sometimes. But… being here feels like home too.”

Her heart fluttered.

“Oh,” she whispered.

He looked at her —

really looked —

eyes warm, gentle, familiar.

⭐ THE ALMOST‑CONFESSION

Lara tied the ribbon, fingers brushing his.

Evan inhaled sharply.

“Lara?”

“Yeah?”

“I… uh…”

He paused, flustered.

“I like when you come over.”

She blinked.

“Oh.”

He laughed nervously.

“Not like that sounded. I mean— I like helping you. I like… seeing you.”

Her breath caught.

“Evan…”

He swallowed.

“I know we’re just neighbors. But sometimes I think… maybe we’re not just that.”

Lara’s heart raced.

“I think that too,” she said softly.

His eyes widened.

“You do?”

She nodded.

“Yeah. I do.”

⭐ THE MOMENT AT THE DOOR

When the package was finally wrapped, Lara stood to leave.

Evan walked her to the door —

a habit he’d never explained

and she’d never questioned.

She turned to him.

“Thanks,” she said. “For the tape. And the cookies. And… everything.”

He smiled — slow, warm, hopeful.

“Anytime.”

She hesitated.

“Evan?”

“Yeah?”

“Can I… come by again? Even when I don’t need anything?”

He blinked.

Then his smile grew —

bright, boyish, impossible to ignore.

“Please do,” he said. “I’d like that.”

She stepped into the hallway, heart fluttering.

Before she could walk away, Evan called out:

“Lara?”

She turned.

He rubbed the back of his neck.

“Next time… maybe stay a little longer?”

She smiled.

“I will.”

And she did.
