Title: The Night We Got Locked In

Series: Moments in the City — Story 23

The community art studio was usually bright and lively during the day.

But at 9:05 PM, it was quiet — too quiet.

Mina packed up her brushes, humming softly as she cleaned her workspace.

She’d lost track of time again.

She always did when she painted.

She grabbed her bag, headed toward the door—

—and the lights went out.

“Wait—what?” she whispered.

A second later, she heard footsteps.

“Hello?” a voice called. “Is someone still here?”

Mina froze.

A guy appeared from the hallway, holding a flashlight.

Tall.

Soft eyes.

Paint smudged on his forearm.

“Oh,” he said, surprised. “I thought I was the last one.”

Mina swallowed.

“I… think we’re both the last ones.”

He tried the door.

It didn’t budge.

He tried again.

Still locked.

He exhaled.

“Well,” he said, turning to her with a sheepish smile, “looks like we’re stuck.”

⭐ THE INTRODUCTION THEY DIDN’T PLAN

He set the flashlight down, letting it illuminate the room.

“I’m Theo,” he said.

Mina blinked.

“Theo? As in… mural Theo?”

He laughed.

“You’ve heard of me?”

“Everyone here has,” she said. “Your work is all over the studio.”

He rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassed.

“Ah. Sorry about that.”

“Don’t be,” she said. “It’s beautiful.”

Theo looked at her — really looked — and smiled.

“Thank you.”

⭐ THE WAITING GAME

They sat on the floor, leaning against the wall, waiting for the security guard to return.

Mina hugged her knees.

“This is so embarrassing,” she said. “I can’t believe I got locked in.”

Theo raised an eyebrow.

“You? I’m the one who was supposed to lock up.”

She laughed.

“Okay, that’s worse.”

He grinned.

“Exactly.”

⭐ THE MOMENT WITH THE PAINT

Theo noticed the dried streak of blue on her wrist.

“You paint too?” he asked.

Mina nodded.

“Yeah. Mostly small pieces. Nothing like your murals.”

He shook his head.

“Hey. Art doesn’t have to be big to matter.”

She looked at him —

surprised, touched.

“That’s… really nice to hear.”

He smiled softly.

“It’s true.”

⭐ THE ALMOST‑CONFESSION

The flashlight flickered.

Mina scooted closer.

“Is it dying?”

Theo nodded.

“Probably.”

She swallowed.

“So… we’re going to be in the dark?”

He chuckled.

“Don’t worry. I’ll keep talking so you know I’m not a ghost.”

She laughed — loud, unfiltered, warm.

Theo stared at her for a moment.

“You have a nice laugh,” he said quietly.

Mina froze.

“Oh.”

He blinked, flustered.

“Sorry. That just slipped out.”

“It’s okay,” she whispered. “I… like yours too.”

Theo’s breath hitched.

“Oh.”

They sat there,

two silhouettes in the dim light,

hearts beating a little too fast.

⭐ THE RESCUE (AND THE ASK)

The door finally clicked open.

The security guard peeked inside.

“Oh! There you two are. Sorry about that.”

Mina stood quickly.

Theo stood too.

As they stepped into the hallway, Theo cleared his throat.

“Mina?”

She turned.

“Yeah?”

He swallowed.

“I… liked being stuck with you.”

Her heart fluttered.

“Me too.”

He took a breath.

“Would it be weird if I asked to see you again? Not in the dark. Not locked in. Just… us.”

She smiled — soft, shy, certain.

“No,” she said. “It wouldn’t be weird.”

Theo exhaled — relieved, hopeful.

“Then… can I?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

He grinned.

“Good. Because I was hoping you’d say that.”

They walked out of the studio together,

the night air cool and gentle,

something new beginning between them.
