Hope.

But hope didn’t last long. Because when Luke stepped outside to check the perimeter, he found something on the gate.

A single black card.

“Midnight. Don’t be late.”

The house buzzed with frantic energy. Maya packed emergency bags, Bella’s mother searched for documents, Richard made calls to people he hadn’t spoken to in years, and Bella stayed close to Luke, her hands trembling every time she heard a noise outside.

But Luke wasn’t trembling. He was thinking.

He watched Richard pace the living room, watched Maya wipe her tears, watched Bella’s mother whisper prayers under her breath. And he realized something:

Running wouldn’t stop Delgado. Running would only delay the inevitable.

Luke stepped forward. “Richard… we need to talk.”

Richard looked up, exhausted. “What is it?”

Luke took a breath. “I’m not leaving.”

Bella gasped. “Luke—”

Richard frowned. “What do you mean you’re not leaving?”

Luke stood tall. “I’m staying. I’m protecting Bella. I’m not running from him.”

Bella’s mother whispered, “You don’t understand how dangerous he is.”

Luke nodded. “I do. That’s why I’m staying.”

Richard shook his head. “Luke, you’re young. You shouldn’t be involved in this.”

Luke’s voice hardened. “I already am.”

Bella looked at him, eyes wide. “Luke… you don’t have to do this for me.”

Luke met her gaze. “I’m not doing it for you. I’m doing it with you.”

Bella’s breath caught.

⭐ The Decision

Richard sighed deeply. “Luke… I can’t let you put yourself in danger.”

Luke stepped closer. “Richard, listen. Delgado isn’t just after Bella. He’s after Maya too. He’s after anyone connected to her mother. If we run, he’ll chase us. If we hide, he’ll find us. But if we stand our ground—”

Bella’s mother interrupted. “He’ll destroy you.”

Luke nodded. “Maybe. But I’d rather fight than run.”

Bella whispered, “Luke… please don’t.”

Luke turned to her, his voice soft. “Bella… I’m not leaving you.”

Bella’s eyes filled with tears.

Richard rubbed his forehead. “Luke… you’re making this harder.”

Luke shook his head. “No. I’m making it possible.”

Richard stared at him for a long moment — then exhaled.

“Fine,” he said quietly. “But you’re not facing him alone.”

Luke nodded. “I wasn’t planning to.”

Luke stepped outside to check the gate, the yard, the driveway. The air was cold, heavy, and unnervingly quiet. The rain had stopped, but the ground was still wet, reflecting the dim porch light.

He walked slowly, scanning every corner.

Then he saw it.

A small black card wedged into the gate latch.

He pulled it out.

Bella’s name was written in red ink.

Again.

Luke’s stomach tightened. He flipped the card open.

“Midnight. Don’t be late.”

Luke clenched his jaw. “He’s playing with us.”

He turned back toward the house — and froze.

A shadow moved near the tree line.

Luke narrowed his eyes. “Who’s there?”

No answer.

He stepped forward slowly.

The shadow shifted again — then disappeared.

Luke’s heart pounded. “Delgado…”

He ran back inside.

⭐ The Warning

Luke burst into the living room. “Richard. Maya. Bella. Everyone. Look.”

He handed Richard the card.

Richard’s face darkened. “He left this?”

Luke nodded. “On the gate.”

Bella’s mother whispered, “He’s watching us.”

Bella trembled. “Luke… what does it mean?”

Luke looked at her gently. “It means he wants you to meet him at midnight.”

Bella shook her head violently. “No. I’m not going anywhere near him.”

Richard nodded. “You’re not. None of us are.”

Maya whispered, “He won’t accept that.”

Luke turned to Richard. “We need to prepare.”

Richard nodded. “We will.”

Bella looked at Luke, her voice barely a whisper. “Are you scared?”

Luke hesitated — then shook his head. “Not when I’m with you.”

Bella’s heart fluttered despite the fear.

⭐ Maya’s Breakdown

Maya sank onto the sofa, covering her face. “This is my fault. All of it.”

Richard knelt beside her. “No. It’s not.”

Maya sobbed. “If I had told you earlier… if I had warned you… maybe we could have stopped him.”

Richard held her hands. “Maya… Delgado was coming no matter what. This isn’t your fault.”

Bella’s mother nodded. “He doesn’t stop. He doesn’t forget. He doesn’t forgive.”

Bella whispered, “Then what do we do?”

Luke answered first. “We stand together.”

Bella walked outside for a moment, needing air. Luke followed her.

She stood near the porch, hugging herself. “Luke… I’m scared.”

Luke stepped beside her. “I know.”

Bella looked up at him. “Why are you doing this? Why are you risking everything?”

Luke took a breath. “Because you matter to me.”

Bella’s eyes widened. “Luke…”

He looked at her gently. “I’m not letting anyone take you. Not Delgado. Not anyone.”

Bella felt her heart break and heal at the same time.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

Luke nodded. “We’ll get through this.”

Bella leaned her head on his shoulder.

Safe.

Then—

A loud thud echoed from the backyard.

Bella jumped. “Luke—”

Luke grabbed her hand. “Stay behind me.”

They ran inside.
