The thud from the backyard echoed through the house like a warning shot. Luke and Richard rushed outside, scanning the shadows, checking the fence, the gate, the trees. But there was no one there — only a small stone lying near the back door.

A stone wrapped in paper.

Luke picked it up slowly. “Richard… look.”

Richard unfolded the paper.
