Title: The Midnight Bookstore Boy Series: Moments in the City — Story 3
The bookstore wasn’t famous. It wasn’t big. It wasn’t modern.
But it stayed open until midnight, and that was enough for Elise.
Every Friday at 11:58 PM, she pushed open the creaky door and stepped into the warm glow of old lamps and older books. It was her ritual — her quiet escape from a loud world.
And every Friday…
he was there.
The boy in the corner aisle. Tall. Soft hoodie. Messy hair. Always reading something thick and complicated.
He never looked up when she entered. But she always felt him notice.
Elise pretended not to care. Pretended she didn’t check if he was there. Pretended she didn’t slow down when she passed his aisle.
But tonight…
something felt different.
He wasn’t reading. He was watching the door.
Waiting.
For her.
When she walked in, his eyes softened — like he’d been holding his breath.
Elise’s heart fluttered.
She walked to her usual shelf, pretending to browse. He stayed in his corner, pretending to read.
Minutes passed.
Then footsteps.
Slow. Careful. Coming toward her.
She froze.
He stopped beside her, holding a book.
“Hi,” he said softly.
Her breath caught. He’d never spoken before.
She turned. “Hi.”
He looked nervous. “I… um… noticed you like this section.”
She glanced at the shelf. “I do.”
He held out the book. “This one reminded me of you.”
Elise blinked. “Me?”
He nodded, cheeks warming. “You always choose stories about people finding themselves. This one is about someone who finds someone else… and then realizes they were finding themselves too.”
Her heart did a slow, warm flip.
She took the book. Their fingers brushed.
A spark. Small. But real.
He swallowed. “I’m Leo.”
“Elise.”
Leo smiled — shy, hopeful, gentle.
“I’ve been wanting to talk to you for weeks,” he admitted. “But I didn’t want to bother you.”
“You’re not bothering me,” she whispered.
He exhaled, relieved.
They stood there, surrounded by books and soft lamplight, the world outside fading into quiet.
Leo looked at her again. “Would you… maybe want to grab tea after you choose your book? There’s a place across the street that stays open late.”
Elise felt her heart open — slow, warm, certain.
“I’d like that,” she said.
Leo’s smile grew — small but full of something new.
“Okay,” he whispered. “I’ll wait by the door.”
As he walked away, Elise pressed the book to her chest.
Her midnight routine… just became something more.
And suddenly, Friday didn’t feel lonely anymore.
