Maya was the first to move. “Come in, anak. You’re safe here.”

Her voice was warm, steady, the kind of tone that made even the most frightened child believe the world wasn’t as cruel as it seemed. Bella stepped inside, her shoes sinking into the soft rug. Nikki peeked from behind the sofa, eyes wide with curiosity, while Luke leaned against the wall, arms crossed, studying Bella with a mix of caution and quiet protectiveness.

Richard entered last, carrying the envelope Bella had handed him earlier. He hadn’t opened it. He couldn’t. Not yet.

Maya placed a hand on his arm. “Read it.”

Richard continued.

“I’m leaving Bella in your care. Not because you owe me anything, but because you were the only person who ever showed me kindness when I had nothing. Please… protect her.”

Bella’s eyes filled with tears. “I didn’t know she wrote that. I just… I didn’t know where else to go.”

Richard closed the letter, his voice trembling. “You’re safe here, Bella. I promise.”

“Dad… who’s that?” Nikki whispered from the stairs.

Richard didn’t answer.
